#285 of 366: begin again, Purity Ring

I’m currently reading the book The Mountain is You by Brianna West and it is very much centered on the concept of pursuing the life you want or person you want to be, but that it will cost you who you’ve been to this point.

As a forest fire cleanses, it also spawns renewal. Some seeds only grow when they’ve felt that fire.

Do you need a fire?

Be good, do good.

#284 of 366: Last of A Dying Breed, Ludacris, Lil Wayne

Had to post this one in honor of attending Lil Wayne’s show in Albany tomorrow night! Can’t wait to see WEEZY!

“And I’m an MC I move the crowd like Moses, like the Red Sea I wear red like roses, go against me and you’ll be dead like roses, spittin’ at ya head full of bread like toasters, never had a holster, I keep it on my lap, and Hip Hop ain’t dead it just had a heart attack, but you see I keep it pumpin’ yeah I got that hard back, so just call me Little Carter or Little Cardiac”

Happy to add him to my live Hip Hop seen list, which includes Eminem, Nas, and The Roots, and Run the Jewels!

Do something for yourself this weekend!

Be good, do good.

#282 of 366: The DJ is Crying for Help, AJR

“Everyone’s laughing at me, but not like they used to, the room’s spinning all around me, but not like I’m used to, hired, hired, can I get hired?, I got no skills except for getting high, I’m trying, trying, I can start Friday, you’ve wasted your life but thanks for applying, hey now hold up, we were fun as hell, I’m all grown up but you couldn’t tell, now I don’t know what to do with myself, (da-da-da-da-da-da-da), you got older ’cause you’re good at life, I’m all 17 at 35, now I don’t know if there’s anything else, the DJ is crying for help”

I feel like a very young 42. I still play video games. I feel like I have 400 friends at Momot ages 4-11 or so. I still have some growing up to do, but imma do it on my own terms and in the way that makes me feel like myself still.

This song seems like an anthem for people feeling like that. Any other millennials out there feeling this way? 😀

Don’t ever stop being yourself! Also, don’t ever stop assessing and reassessing what “yourself” is. It’s ok to change!

Be good, do good.

P.S. Thanks for putting up with the sputtering posts lately! I’m caught up now I think! Appreciate you being here!

#281 of 366: Vampire, Olivia Rodrigo

As I’ve mentioned in other posts featuring her, Rodrigo has her finger on the pulse of relationships, especially so for Gen-Z I think. Her song writing resonates though, I think with older listeners like me as well.

It all seems authentic to me…and true to what even the experience in HS for me was. Her debut album, Sour, was excellent. Check out how many listens she has for that one.

Yeah, that’s billions with a B.

This part of Vampire though, slaps.

“I’ve made some real big mistakes, but you make the worst one look fine, I should’ve known it was strange, you only come out at night, I used to think I was smart, but you made me look so naive, the way you sold me for parts, as you sunk your teeth into me, oh, bloodsucker, famefucker, bleedin’ me dry, like a goddamn vampire”

That is a red-hot poker there in bold.

Well done, Olivia.

Be good, do good!

#280 of 366: Substitution, Silversun Pickups

The tempo of this song is what grabbed me. I love the energy it has.

“When the voices start spitting just be aware, I’ve brought enough stones for us to share, that one’s grinning that one’s burning aim for the throat, let ’em choke on the stones that we have to throw”

Think I’m gonna do a Silversun Pickups deep-dive tonight!

What have you been meaning to spend some time on? Is tonight the night you start?

Be good, do good.

#279 of 366: Afraid of Heights, boygenius

Coming off that Elle King song, you can hear some similarities here in boygenius’ work. These three amazing voices we’ve together in a such a rich tapestry of sound I can’t help but get nostalgic hearing their work too. It cuts through scar tissue to the soft stuff.

Amazingly talented separately, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus combine for this musical supergroup. Get yourself a deep listen soon.

Be good, do good.

#278 of 366: Jersey Giant, Elle King

As I mentioned in a former post about Zach Bryan song, I grew up with my parents playing and signing country, bluegrass, and gospel music. It will forever be in my blood and make me nostalgic.

Something about this song brought me back to those childhood years of sound in my home.

I had no idea until today that the song title is a breed of chicken. Friendly and docile, just like I like ’em. Not like that hell-beast rooster that chased me around my Uncle Bills house. 😀

Be good, do good, watch out for roosters.
