#95 of 366: Woman, Cat Power, Lana Del Rey

There’s something haunting about Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and her voice. There’s an amazing flexibility to how she wields it, as it can cut like a blade, and caress like a soft hand. It pairs well with Lana’s classic almost-crooner sound.

“Your money’s like a weapon, a tool to get me, you think I’m like the other ones, well, my money’s like a weapon, tool for me, no, I’m not like the other ones, a cage is like a weapon, a tool for me, you think I’m like the other ones, well my cage is a weapon, it’s perfect for me, it’s the one suit they seem to not see, I’m a woman of my word, now haven’t you heard?, My word’s the only thing I’ve ever needed, I’m a woman of my word, now you have heard, my word’s the only thing I truly need”

Little too much on my mind to write today. Gonna go do some drawing. Don’t be afraid to take a time out on something if you need to! BGDG!

#87 of 366: Flatlining, Holly Humberstone

Lost this post to WordPress when it was the only one I wrote at the time, so it’s not down to the batch posting. So annoying to literally write a post, and then have it disappear immediately. You’re killing me WordPress! No more. I’m taking Michael Hollis’s advice and writing in Word then pasting.

I absolutely love when the beat comes into this song. Like pounding your fist on a table. It’s a vibe.

“Go ahead and wipe the hard drive, and all the good times, I’m the host that haunts your camera roll, let the credits roll tonight, we’ve got no chance of resuscitation, romance I rip from the pages, I let you go through the stages (I go through the stages), first kiss is under the streetlight, our greatest hits on repeat, I just can’t delete what it feels like, we just can’t be friends anymore (oh-oh, oh-oh), did I use you ’til you’re heart turned black, we just can’t be friends anymore”

Enjoy! I hope you have a great day! Be good, do good.

#Wow of Songs I’ve Listened To Today: Breath of Life, Florence + The Machine **Bonus Post! Jaw Dropping Rediscovery**

Florence + The Machine is one of my favorite musical acts of all-time. Somehow…somehow…this one slipped through the cracks? I have no memory of hearing it before. Apparently this song was used for a Snow White movie?! Where in the heck was I in 2011? What was I paying attention to? I feel like I just got slapped in the face. This song HITS.

Florence Welch’s voice contains one of the biggest ranges I’ve ever heard. She can go so deep she croaks and sounds like she’s got gravel in her throat, and the very next second she’s hitting some sort of angelic high-note. She’s a Valkyrie screaming a battle cry at the beginning of this song.

Epic is the only word I can think of to describe it. Four minutes and eight seconds of epic. First off, they used every kind of instrument in the world in the song. You can hear it all in this one. Pretty incredible technical achievement if you ask me.

Then all of a sudden we have this choir part?! With this crazy bassline or synth? Who produces stuff like this? Is this all just in that person’s head? Is this how Florence hears songs when she writes them? Honestly no matter which way it happens, it sounds different than anything else.

Florence really is incomparable. I’m so excited to see what her and Taylor Swift are cooking up for The Tortured Poets Department!

“I was looking for a breath of life, for a little touch of heavenly light, but all the choirs in my head say, no, to get a dream of life again, a little vision of the start at the end, but all the choirs in my head say, no, but I needed one more touch, another taste of heavenly rush, and I believe, I believe it so

I’ve listened to it like ten times in a row. It’s exhilarating. Enjoy!

#84 of 366: Dumbest Girl Alive, 100 gecs

WordPress clearly has an issue when I feel productive and try to knock out a few blog posts. It swallowed this one. At least in this case, it was a short post for a short song.

This song is BONKERS. I can’t even begin to try and describe what genres are here, so I’ll let the band do it themselves.

What I love about this track is that there’s a vibe like someone at some point made the mistake of calling Laura, “the dumbest girl alive”. She seems to have taken that and deftly turned it into a flex. A musical uno reverse card. no u.

It’s only 2:17 seconds, but it’s an all-out sprint as soon as the starting gun goes off.

No lyric highlights, because essentially the entire song is one verse. But the way they Frankenstein’d together genres and came out with something that WORKS as well as this? Color me impressed.

Be good, do good.

#81 of 366: Chemtrails Over The Country Club, Lana Del Rey

Early on in this playlists existence, this song rated even higher than it is here. It stuck in the Top-10 for quite a while. It’s a great song, so I guess that goes to show how good everything is before it! 😉

This is a lemonade from lemons post. WordPress ate another one. I think something wonky is happening when I’m scheduling multiple posts back to back. I believe this happens when I “batch-write” posts. Anywho, I’ve decided to frame it as the universe saying “give that another guy, Tiger…not your best work!”.

I’ve decided to call it the universe, you might call it God, six of one, half dozen of the other to me personally. I don’t begrudge anyone their faith whatsoever, I just found it wasn’t for me.

A year ago April, the universe presented me with a stray black cat in the backyard. That cat was a black loaf of bread on my lap while I wrote this original post. I can tell you without hesitation we needed each other. I think the idea of reincarnation is dope, so I like to think he’s someone important to me from another life. Or it’s like the SpiderVerse and he’s just a multiversal me.

What in the hell does this all have to do with Lana Del Rey? This lead-in is twice as long as the original post!

“Meet you for coffee, at the elementary schools, we laugh about nothing, as the summer gets cool, it’s beautiful, how this deep, normality settles down over me, I’m not bored or unhappy, I’m still so strange and wild”

Lana Del Rey has an absolutely magnificent voice. Curated or not, there’s definitely some old Hollywood lady-crooner pipes. If you haven’t listened to the hits off her debut album, you are missing out. Bangers left and right. The title track. Video Games. National Anthem. Dark Paradise. Summertime Sadness. This Is What Makes Us Girls. Gods & Monsters. They are all great in their own way.

I hope you enjoyed the lemonade. Be good, do good.

#79 of 366: ceilings, Lizzy McAlpine

This is one of the prettiest songs I heard last year. Lyrics are a little sad though, but do not take away from the beautiful whole. If you’re on TikTok, you may have heard this song already, because it was used in about a bajillion videos.

“But it’s over, then you’re driving me home, and it kind comes out, as I get up to go, you kiss me in your car, and it feels like the start of a movie I’ve seen before, but it’s not real, and you don’t exist, and I can’t recall the last time I was kissed, it hits me in the car, and it feels like the end of a movie I’ve seen before, before”

I was so heart-broken once I listened to the song enough times and focused on the lyrics to know that she’s just imagining this person in the end. That’s the hallmark of a good sad song to me, when it actually hurts you a little to listen to it every time. I guess the hallmark itself might be how acute you end up feeling the emotion that’s being expressed in the song, right?

There’s just something about McAlpine’s breathy delivery that makes this song sting all the more. You feel her loneliness, or the loneliness of the character in the song I guess, but she says “me” so, I’m going with this being a lived experience. It’s too authentic to not be honestly. When songwriters bare their soul like this, it’s special.

Homework for today is to check in with yourself. What’s working? What’s not? What change can we make for the better. I wish that for you. Be good, do good.

#77 of 366: 1975, Tash Sultana

I fell in love with Tash’s music around 8 years ago when I watched this YouTube video as they rocked a street busking session with their own loop pedals and stuff. It was crazy! I’ll link it at the end of the post for sure.

“‘Cause we can talk talk talk ’til the lights go out, and we can dance and shout til our lungs give out, the moon will sweep us off our feet and into galaxies, and the blackened sky makes our senses rise, and we convince ourselves for a moment of time, that this is where we’re meant to be, when we all fall asleep, when are all knee deep, inside the water that is rising, for the tide to come and take us out to sea, this is how it feels to just be, free”

They are a fantastic guitar player, as you’ll see in the video at the end and hear for yourself in the song. Definitely both an inspiration for me to pick one up. I’ll start learning some chords soon. My guitar is just staring at me judgingly as I write about learning how to play guitar.

Here’s that YouTube vid:

Have a fantastic day! Do something for someone else today and I bet you’ll find you end up happier for the result. Be good, do good.

#76 of 366: Mud, Slow Pulp

That photo. That voice. Their sound. 10-10-10

The word pure comes to mind. That can’t be a bad thing. That guitar in the beginning puts this song at the top of the list for ones I wanna learn on my new one.

“I don’t know what I’m still doing here, yet another full moon that I missed this year, do you miss me, dear?, can’t be this alone and stay so clear, wanna be an astronaut and get out of here, ’cause I miss you dear, so be honest”

There’s a sleepiness to this song that just resonates with me. Like the harmony syncs with me somehow. I love it top to bottom.

Take a little step on something you’ve been dreading lately today. 1% better is progress.

Be good, do good!

#52 of 366: Everybody Rise, Amy Shark

I enjoy that this song so well describes the feeling of having a crush on someone, right? You put that person on a pedestal and just admire them whenever they are around.

“One day I’m just gonna walk up to you, say it how it is, I’m in love with you, been thinking ’bout this for a month or two, God help me, I’ve been so scared to, I’m gonna reach out say “Hey” (hey), been thinkin’ ’bout you all day, all these years I’ve been a ghost to you, put your hands on me they’ll go straight through, I get it, I’m not in your league, too hot, help me make it stop, God have mercy on me”

Hearts for eyes right?

Amy Shark, with a awesome Adidas top

“Everybody, everybody rise for you, everybody everybody cries like I do, we all wonder what it’s like, to be with you, with you, everybody rise, and now my heart’s on the floor, when you push back your hair, and I love you from way over there”

We’ve all had that person that we admired from afar. Must be nice to be that person huh? The one everyone pines for? I certainly wouldn’t know! HAHA

That’s what makes this song so relatable. We’ve been there with Amy. That’s the thing about life too…we’ve all been a to a lot of the same places. Wouldn’t it be nice if we turned our attention from the heartthrob to one another?

Food for thought. Love you! Enjoy!

#49 of 366: Indigo, Kississippi

This song feels like a big hug. It feels like comfort. Zoe Reynolds, the aforementioned Kississippi, blends honeyed vocals with velvet guitar so well that this song packs quite a punch for the two and a half minutes it lasts.

“I can’t stop thinking about how nice it would be, to be bothered by your breath reclaiming mine, to wake up in the morning half dead to you, unable to find a place to rest your arms, I can’t move ‘cos he’s comfortable there, his legs tangled mine, hands tangled in hair, I can’t move ‘cos he’s comfortable there”

That’s it. That’s the whole song. Just repeated two and a half times. It’s such a sweet and pure snapshot of the described moment? I picture breeze blowing a lacey curtain, sunshine hitting the floor on the side of the bed. A ceiling fan spinning with the smallest of noises from a loose blade. Time moving like molasses. Bliss, right?

Such a simple song, but so beautiful IMO. It’s Saturday, with someone or solo, I want you to try and find that bliss. Love you lots. Thanks for reading.
