#171 of 366: Yellow Roses, Ilsey

“You brought me yellow roses, I wanted red, I want your warmth and closeness, I’m not your friend, oh, and some other love, she is the fortunate one, you’ll give her all that I want, and I’ll get nothing, nothing, but dreams in the night, flowers that wither and die, chasing impossible skies, into nothing, nothing”

What a beautifully melancholy lament. Right. In. The. Feels.

I was thinking of how short my recent posts are and I just reminded myself “that’s where you’re at right now”. I like to do some interpretation and narrative maybe about the songs I discovered, but with the school year winding down and things go go go, sometimes little snippets are ok! We’ll be “back to our regularly scheduled programming” in terms of some writing soon.

#157 of 366: Seeing Green, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Lil Wayne

I’m really not a fan of Drake’s, at all. I wish he wasn’t on this track, but he is.

That said, we were do for a silly Hip Hop song. My favorite detail in the whole thing (and has to be up there of all-time I think, it’s that great) is right in the beginning of Weezy’s verse where you can hear him remove said (assuming Balenciaga) mask in the middle of rapping “let me take this Balenciaga mask off”.

Tickets…still…available!

BE GOOD DO GOOD!

#145 of 366: Grey, EXES

EXES uses the superior spelling of the word grey, and even manages to turn it into a beautiful verb. Sometimes I listen to these songs when I’m writing posts and just shocked with myself that they didn’t end up in the Top 100. This song is incredibly gorgeous, and a great listen.

“I thought I was alone, too lost to find a home, in someone else, with someone else, you’ve opened up my soul, set fire to my bones, and I can tell, you know me well, you got me head over heels, and I love how it feels, you’re the one I wanna stay with, you’re the one I wanna Grey with, and I’m safe by your side, when you kiss me goodnight, you’re the one I wanna lay with, you’re the one I wanna Grey with”

Ava’s senior Sectional meet was a roaring success, with her taking home three Sectional Championships. I couldn’t be happier, but I am exhausted. Goodnight!

#144 of 366: Start It Up, Lloyd Banks, Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous, Ryan Leslie

I’ve already professed my being a superfan for Hip-Hop songs that feature 5 or more rappers. This song is the a solid hype song for my Ava Bean’s Sectional Championship today. LET’S START IT UP, BEAN!

Also, I love picturing my friend Mike listening to Hip-Hop songs like this at 5:45am! HAHAHAHAHA.

Let this energy carry you swiftly through whatever finish lines you’re racing toward today!

#140 of 366: Evergreen, PVRIS

“I think I felt God strike me from the top, humbled my ass real quick, I thought I had it all, but it went wrong, felt like an acid trip, bite my tongue, right my wrongs, but I don’t wanna deal with it, came to peace with my ego slipping, I can’t help, feel like I’m a little alone, it’s no use to try, what’s the point if I still just feel like I’m a little alone”

In my opinion though, the lyric to highlight is:

“I don’t care what they say’ bout me, yeah, I’m gonna be evergreen, gonna be evergreen”

Emphasis that of Google, I happen to like both thank you very much.

What an intention to set. Remaining green and functional no matter what the environment throws at us.

A daily goal of “retaining freshness or interest? Yes, please.

Here’s to whatever it is you do today that keeps things fresh. Perfect time of year for something like that.

Be good, do good.

#133 of 366: I Stand Corrected, Vampire Weekend

There was SOMETHING about Vampire Weekend I didn’t like for the longest time. Something about how they sounded the majority of the time was just off-putting to me.

I had realized though, last year, that I never game them a proper chance. Turns out, this song was a bop, which I like very much, and it was the perfect one for me to come clean with that I had really missed some good songs by them because of my blanket indifference to them.

“You’ve been checking on my facts, and I admit I have been lax, in double-screening what I say, it wasn’t funny anyway, I stand corrected, I stand corrected”

Well, here I am. I stand corrected.

#131 of 366: Shove, Mali Velasquez

This is probably one of the deeper pulls on the list and it’s a fantastic discovery.

This one is a shortie, so I can post the whole song.

You shove your fun in my face and thumb in my mouth
And I wanna do what you say if it’d make you feel proud
And ow that burns
But it’s too late
‘Cause I held you anyway
Did I bite a hole in your neck and drain you dry?
Do we still wake up every mornin’ at the same time?
And ow that hurts
But I don’t care at all
‘Cause at least I can feel you there
And ow that hurts
But I don’t care
‘Cause at least I can…

A beautiful lament.

Just a reminder that there’s no light without the dark. As my watch of Baby Driver this evening taught me, Dolly Parton wisely said “you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain”.

Balance in all things, my friend. BGDG.

#129 of 366: The Feels, Labrinth

I simply, unequivocally, and completely, love the organ sounds in this song. I feel like it gives it so much depth and gravitas.

“I got hit by a truck, I got hit by a truck, and it drove off and left me here for dead, a long night here, cryin’ in the rain, yeah, I got touched by God and it fucked me up, like an electrical current crossing through my veins, lightning came and hit me again”

Being “in our feels” can feel like that though can’t it? Heavy, like the only thing we can pay attention to. I think Labrinth does a beautiful job putting that feeling to song.

If you enjoy this, you’d definitely enjoy his entire catalog. It’s full of good listens.

#127 of 366: Snow On The Beach, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey

“This scene feels like what I once saw on the screen, I searched “aurora borealis green”, I’ve never seen someone lit from within, blurring out my periphery, my smile is like I won a contest, and to hide that, would be so dishonest, and to hide that, would be so dishonest, and it’s fine to fake it ’til you make it, ’til you do, ’til it’s true”

If you’re a Taylor fan, you’re probably immersed in The Tortured Poets Department, but I really, really enjoyed the album this track appears on, Midnights.

The duet with Lana, is just beautiful. I’m glad Taylor went back and added more Lana (and even titled the song feat. More Lana Del Rey) because in the first release of this song, it really didn’t feel like you could hear Lana. This one give her her own verse, and it’s a ton better.

I think this is a nice Sunday song. I hope you enjoy it, and your day!
